Status Report for weeks 9-10

by dwoods last modified 2004-04-04 10:26 AM

This week we are still in the process of setting-up MythTV. On the prevoius week we had problems getting IvyTv to work with the 2.4 kernel so we decided that it would be best to change to a newer kernel 2.6. According to a few sites the 2.4 kernel is not usually compatible with MythTV, those who were able to get MythTV to work still experienced some reception issues. The how-to-doc we were using did not indicate this so now we are now using another site, which seems to have better documentation. The site can be found at wopr.yi.org/myth.html. During our 2.6.3 kernel installation we got a really big scare. When we tried to reboot the computer using the newer kernel the computer would not boot up. We tried using the 2.4 Kernel to start up the computer but absolutely nothing would work. After an hour of searching the Gentoo forums we were able to find someone who had experienced a similar problem. The problem was in the devfsd file, while trying to re-boot the devfsd file got hung-up on the configuration we made last week. On the previous week we made changes to this file to get our video card to work. The Gentoo forums thankfully provided a fix, we had to copy the /etc/devfs.conf file from the Gentoo disk, which was free from errors.

Well after we got the 2.6 kernel working, IvyTV worked fine. Our next task was to get the Lirc (Linux infrared control) set-up. This controls the remote control. The only problem we experience while setting this up was that at first it went to the 2.4 kernel so the fix for this was to change the synlink to point to the new kernel.

We decided to go back and make some changes to our Mplayer and ALSA files to stay in line with the instructions that we are using now. With the Mplayer we just needed to upgrade to a newer version. We will also need to go back and re-do Freevo.

We are now ready to start installing MythTV. There was a problem with the lib dvb file. We received an error saying it failed but were going to try and work around since it may not be needed for this project. If we find we need it we will have to go back and find out what’s causing the error. MythTv will take a while to compile so we won’t be able to continue this process until our next meeting.
