Status Report for Weeks 1 - 4

Here's what we've been up to for the past 4 weeks.

Getting Started

During the first phase of our project we focused on setting up a Linux environment on to our test computer. We decided to go with the Gentoo version of Linux using a gaming kernel. We choose to use the gaming kernel because it will be useful for video capture, video playback and audio. Setting-up Gentoo was an essential part of this phase and took some time to complete. At first we had problems mounting to the root file system and we were receiving fstab warnings. The team’s first thought was that there might be a problem with the hard-drive, so we ordered a new one. But later we were able to test the old hard-drive and found that the hard-drive was fine. We continued to check other components on the computer, such as the compressor and even the Gentoo disks in which we use to install Linux, to rule out error. But these things checked out fine. After about a week of troubleshooting, the problem was narrowed down to a compatibility issue. The RAM we installed on the previous week prove to be incompatible with the test computer, so it was removed it. Unlike the Gentoo installation the TV card was fairly easy and quick to install. Also since we already had an extra hard-drive we installed that as well. In addition, we set up a small portable TV that will be used to test our results during the last phase. Presently we’re still having problems getting decent reception from within the school and we are still exploring ways to improvise.
